A Cologne cabinet from the workshop of Melchior von RheidtEbony, maple, pear and stained and branded fruitwood and softwood veneers on softwood and oak, wrought iron locks. Two-part cabinet with two-doored lower section and two-doored upper section. The pediment supported by two three-dimensional carved female caryatids. The front legs each with a mascaron. All framing elements richly inlaid with bird, flower, and foliage motifs as well as strapwork on ebonised wood ground. The doors inlaid with large flower vases. The upper doors with birds in trompe l'oiel frames. The centre with two drawers flanked by female mascarons, the front of the base with three corresponding male mascarons. All four outer faces inlaid with strapwork in moulded surrounds. The hand of one caryatid lost, minor losses to the inlays, minor shrinkage cracks, traces of earlier insect damage. A Limoges enamel ewer with Moses and the Brazen SerpentEnamel, gilding and silver plating on copper. Vessel made up of a funnel-shaped foot, ovoid body with rounded shoulder, tapering neck and tall handle. The lower section painted with and Old Testament scene, the shoulder with a river god, faun, female figures and scrollwork, the handle with trophies on white ground. The shaft and neck with acanthus scrolls, the foot with a patterned cymation. Chips and cracks to the handle, the neck and shaft restored. H 28.8 cm. Attributed to Pierre Reymond, third quarter 16th C. Pierre Reymond (c. 1513 - c. 1584) ran one of the most successful enamel painting studios in Limoges. He specialised in grisaille painting on a black background, which suited the taste of the time, and created the most important works of art of his era. A Limoges enamel plate with an allegory of DecemberPainted in grisaille on copper, with minor iron red accents and gilding. Painted in the centre with a depiction of figures collecting firewood and slaughtering a pig, the border with zoomorphic figures holding shields and an oval medallion with the zodiac sign of Capricorn, inscribed "DECEMBRE" below. The centre of the underside with a portrait of an emperor facing left on gold dotted ground in a large scrollwork cartouche, the border with eight dragon-like creatures alternating with oval cartouche motifs, one dated 1560, the other monogrammed P.R. Retouches to the rim on both sides. D 17.6 cm. Limoges, Pierre Reymond, 1560. Pierre Reymond (c. 1513 - c. 1584) ran one of the most successful enamel painting studios in Limoges. He specialised in grisaille painting on a black background, which suited the taste of the time, and created the most important works of art of his era. A Limoges enamel plate representing the month of JuneEnamel in grisaille and iron red and gilding on copper panel. With a sheep shearing scene in the centre. Inscribed "IVING" in the upper right beneath the zodiac sign Cancer on gold ground. The border with four mascarons alternating with scrollwork and garlands. The underside painted with a scrollwork cartouche with two mascarons and the monogram "I.C." Monogrammed I.C. on the reverse. D 18.8 cm. Monogrammist I.C., around 1550 - 60. The masterfully painted pieces by this as yet unidentified artist are among the highlights of any collection. They are in no way inferior in quality to the products of Pierre Reymond's studio. This monogramist also preferred painting en grisaille on a black background with white highlights. A museum quality Augsburg column clockGilt and silver-plated brass/bronze, blued steel, cast iron escapement. Day-running with chain and fusee, striking via lock plate with pierced tendril decor, hourly striking to a bell. The movement housed in a silver-plated cuboid case with foliate engravings and ormolu appliques of winged herms at the angles and festoons. With silver-plated aperture ring with indicator for the months, zodiac sign and date above. The column plinth inset with four silver-plated plaques with depictions of the sun engraved "CONTRA FERVNTVR", "VNA FERVNTVR", "SVPRA FERVNTVR" and "INFRA FERVNTVR". The round column entwined by a spiralling band with tiny figures of Cupid indicating the hours. The foliate capital with a small dial indicating the hours in Roman numerals. Engraved on the plate "Davidt Buschmann Aug:". Damage to the upper hour indicator on the column, the four Cupids loose, the attribute and one foot missing, minor losses to the tortoiseshell. On a softwood stand veneered in tortoiseshell and with ebonised wood mountings, total H 58.2, stand W 26.5, D 26.5 cm.
